My baby-rearing "bible" has been Dr. Sears' The Baby Book.

Though I don't necessarily agree absolutely with everything that Dr. Sears says, I do agree with the general direction that his book takes, particularly his advocacy of what he calls "attachment parenting." Attachment parenting is, if I may attempt to describe it in my own words, "baby-led parenting." Instead of the parents trying to impose on baby their schedule, their weaning methods and their feeding methods, they instead allow baby to take the lead and to progress from one stage of development to the next based on when the baby expresses readiness to do so. The idea is that this is more "natural" (hence, attachment parenting is considered a form of "natural parenting").

Attachment parenting thus promotes baby-led schedules (as opposed to, say, the Ferber method), breastfeeding, co-sleeping, and baby-wearing.

Over the last few years, attachment parenting has gained some advocates here in the Philippines, and some of those advocates have put together a seminar this March for interested parents.

"MINDFUL PARENTING: An In-depth Journey into Modern-Day Attachment Parenting" is a seminar on attachment parenting that will be held at the Echo Store in Serendra on March 21, Saturday, 1 - 4 p.m. The seminar cost is P550, inclusive of snacks. Speakers will be Jen C.C. Tan (of Next9), Buding Aquino Dee (of LATCH and Blissfulbabes), Monica Eleazar-Manzano (of INDIGOBaby), and Denise C.S Gonzales (also of INDIGOBaby).

The Echo Store is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Telephone: 901-3485
