Several weeks ago, I wrote about my experiences cloth-diapering my newborn son. I had tried 3 methods: Chino Pinos with locally available one-size-fits-all diaper covers, imported sized diaper covers and contour diapers, and Tushy Wushies.

My verdict was that the combination of imported diaper covers and contour diapers worked best, but were expensive. Tushy Wushies performed okay, and were cheaper.

Well, it's been awhile since that post, and since then my son has grown very quickly ... and gone through many more diapers ... and so here's my follow-up post.

Over the Christmas break, I asked my brother, visiting from the US, to bring me Thirsties diaper covers. I'd read about Thirsties on many online diaper forums based in the US, and it was apparent that Thirsties were the most popular diaper covers there.

I tried Thirsties on my son and I was really happy with the performance. They performed just as well as the previous Canadian-made brand that I'd bought, with one additional perk: the inside of the Thirsties could be wiped clean after each use, and so I didn't need to wash the diaper cover every nappy change. Each Thirsties diaper cover could go through two or three uses, unlike the previous one I tried which I had to change each time. Because of that, I only needed 4 Thirsties diaper covers in rotation, instead of 8.

I also tried Thirsties with prefolded lampin (Chino Pino brand), and they worked great. The Chino Pino prefolds are rather thin: each outer panel only has 2 layers and the inner panel only has 3 layers. So I used two prefolds at a time to make 4 layers on outer panels and 6 layers on the inside. Again, they worked fantastically.

Because my son was bigger now, he finally fit better into the other brands of one-size-fits-all diaper covers I'd bought at SM. But Thirsties blew the competition away. Moisture went right through the Enfant diaper covers (as pretty as they were), and the So-en ones simply didn't fit well enough around the legs, threatening to leak poop at any moment.

So I officially became a Thirsties fan. And because I believe in the product so much, I've decided to resell Thirsties here in the Philippines. So if you want to try Thirsties too, just click on the link to Pinoy Baby's online store to make a purchase!

    Hi sis, ask ko lang, di ba mainit sa skin ni baby yung thirties? my MIL bought 2 dozens of bird's eye lampin pwede bang gamitin yun sa thirties? btw di ba sya bulky especially pag yung chino pino ang ginamit na diaper kay baby? thanks =)

    Hi pame!

    Yes, pwedeng-pwede ang bird's eye lampin sa Thirsties! Pwede rin ang Chino Pino velcro fitted diapers. The Chino-Pino is slightly more bulky compared to the bird's eye, but just make sure that you slip the edges of the Chino Pino into the diaper covers, and the whole thing will fit snugly. Nasusuot pa rin ng anak ko ang mga onesies niya over the diaper covers kahit Chino Pino ang nasa loob.

    Thirsties is made of polyester with urethane coating so it's quite breathable. It's definitely a lot more breathable than the cheap plastic panties that use PVC. In fact magugulat ka when you see the diaper covers, because the material is very soft kahit na waterproof.

    wow talaga!! hmmm i haven't given birth yet kasi, kaya haven't tried the plastic panties i bought para ima-match ko sana sa chino pino.. one thing i worry about nga is baka mag-leak lang yung plastic panties na nabili ko, so parang sayang lang diba.. btw, yung chino pino ba pwede na yun for newborn babies? feeling ko kasi parang malaki siya?? thanks =)

    Medyo malaki nga yung Chino Pino with velcro for newborns. Supposed to be pwede siyang iadjust for newborns because you can fold the top over and use the smaller velcro size, pero malaki pa rin yung leg holes for newborns. My son started using the Chino Pino with velcro noong mga 10 weeks old na siya.

    Hi, Rowie. My baby is on Kushies right now. I want to try other products to add to add to my stash. How do you use the Thirsties with a normal lampin?

    Hi, sorry for the dumb question. I just saw your Youtube post, so I guess that answers my question. Thanks for sharing.

    just a comment on your reply to pame, how old is your baby? and how big are the onesies?

    the chino pino's are now a bit tight with my 9mos old baby. and you said, you tried the chino pinos double? and with a cover pa!? hindi ba mainit un? anyway, im just looking for a cloth diaper pre folded with velcro snaps. just like chino pino's but a larger size.

    does anybody out there know where i can buy one?

    thanks.

    Rogel

    Hi Rogel,

    Right now my baby is already almost 11 months old. The one that I doubled was the Chino Pino prefolds, not the Chino Pino velcro fitted diapers.

    The Pinoy Baby Store sells different sizes of fitted diapers that have Velcro closures. You can check out our cloth diapering products by clicking here.

    Hi rowie,ask ko lang kung ano yung mas okay gamitin for newborns, esp PETITE newborns: thirsties original diaper cover (XS) or thirsties duo wrap (Size 1).

    I'm on my 34th week now and according to my latest ultrasound, my baby is around 5 lbs. I'm assuming that as long as I go to full term, my baby will be about 6-6.5 lbs

    I'm just wondering exactly how well the size one duo wrap fits a newborn, compared to the size xs regular cover?

    Are the duos too bulky/big on a newborn, or would you say the smallest setting is about the same as the xs size?

    Kasi nabasa ko in some reviews na iba yung fit ng Duos sa Thirsties sized covers. Sabi nila narrower and trimmerand trimmer daw ang fit ng Duos.

    I just wonder which I should get. What would you recommend? thanks!=)

    Hi newmom,

    the smallest setting on the duo wrap is similar to the XS size. you can use it for newborns. :)

  13. Meg // July 19, 2011 6:29 PM

    Thank you so much for this blog! It is very informative especially for first time mommies like me.

    May I ask for your advice? What size of Thirsties Diaper Cover should I buy for newborn? The XS or S? Your other post mentioned that in retrospect, you would've bought the S size instead of the XS (but that was another brand).

    Thanks in advance and looking forward to ordering =D

  14. rowie // July 19, 2011 9:05 PM

    Hi Meg,

    You're welcome. It really depends on the size of your baby and what you intend to use with it. The Thirsties Duo Wraps are adjustable, so they last longer than the XS Thirsties Diaper Covers. But if you're planning to use thick fitted diapers (such as those brands that are meant for overnight use), the Thirsties Duo Wraps might be too tight, so the Thirsties Diaper Covers are a better option. For the Thirsties Diaper Covers, it depends on the size of your baby. We have sizing charts at http://store.pinoybaby.com. I hope this helps! :)

    Hi sis, I'm still 3 mos. pregnant but as early as now, I've been reading stuff bout cloth diapering. My husband and I plan to use DD for the first month since mahilig pa mag poop ang baby nyan then succeeding months would be CD during daytime and DD during nighttime. Estimate lng namin mga 14 hrs. cya nka CD then the rest DD na (with every 2 hrs na change ng nappies in mind).

    We're confused as to which diapering system we should go for:

    *Fitted Diapers (???) +
    Diaper Covers (Thirsties)*
    Pros -->
    this is the most leakproof system; Feels dry against baby's skin; convenient, fast and easy to put on baby + I can use the cover for 3x max before washing them if we use the Thirsties Diaper Cover; I only need 4 covers and 7 fitted diapers per rotation

    Which brand of Fitted Diapers do you suggest go well with Thirsties Diaper Cover? (Mas gusto ko fitted than prefold pra mabilis ang changing ng diapers ni baby)

    Cons -->
    Expensive talaga (but we think this will be worth it naman since its for the comfort of the baby and he/she will not be prone to rashes); With the Thirsties Diaper Cover (although enough na ung 4pcs per rotation), we need to go through 3 sizes pa as our baby grows and 2 sizes sa Fitted Diapers(more expense)..; Thirsties use velcro instead of snaps.

    *Pocket Diapers*
    And then there is also the Tushy Wushy Pocket Diapers.

    Pros-->
    Definitely cheaper diapering system eto; feels dry against baby's skin; leakproof;they use snaps instead of velcro.

    Cons -->
    3 sizes din but then again its much cheaper..

    So which system you think is best considering the expense, convenience and baby's comfort?

  16. rowie // July 28, 2011 10:30 AM

    Hi seraphicmortal,

    All the brands you mentioned now have adjustable equivalents, so you only need to go through one or two sizes.

    Thirsties Duo Wrap (adjustable version of Thirsties Diaper Covers): http://store.pinoybaby.com/category/diapercovers.htm

    Thirsties Duo Fab Fitted (adjustable version of the older fitted diapers): http://store.pinoybaby.com/category/diaperfitted.htm

    Next9 (adjustable version of Tushy Wushy): http://store.pinoybaby.com/category/diaperpockets.htm#next9

    I hope you find this helpful!

    hi sis. My son is 18 months already. I recently brought cloth diaper. But its wont fit him well at naglleak. what would you suggest for him? i would like sana to try a training pant na. thanks in advance.

  18. rowie // December 1, 2011 3:35 PM

    Hi Meet Momaye,

    Perhaps the cloth diaper you bought is the wrong size? I suggest you try to get an adjustable cloth diaper to make sure that it fits your baby properly. Also make sure that it's made of leakproof material. You can email us at info at pinoybaby dot com if you have questions about specific cloth diapers.
